La Ventana Stories
An ongoing series of write-ups about the history and the happenings of La Ventana Bay and the surrounding region. Recent highlights:
MasViento: Wind – January 17, 2025 - An ASCAT pass last evening measured 15 knot NNW winds over the Sea of Cortez east of Cerralvo, and model forecasts show a ridge of high pressure centered just to our north will provide ample north background flow again today. (by MasViento)
The Sea Around Us: Mako Sharks - Last December we encountered a mako shark swimming at the surface, I had seen a couple before, but not like this. We stopped the motor and watched it swim around our boat, coming back and forth slowly, very relaxed, and curious. It looked like it had a malformation on its spine, which probably explains its behavior. (by María Rodriguez-Salinas)
Meet the Owners: Tortillería Las Brisas - In the heart of La Ventana, where tradition meets daily sustenance, Tortillería Las Brisas stands as a testament to family dedication and craftsmanship. This yellow building, now a cornerstone of the community, began with a fisherman's pivot to tortilla making, transforming his expertise from the sea to the essential staples of Mexican cuisine. (by Natalie Smith)
All Things Reptile: No Coral Snakes in Baja California Sur - I want to make it clear that there are no coral snakes in Baja California Sur. There are, however, a variety of colorful nonvenomous snakes that are commonly encountered in our area, which is the main reason that coral snakes are believed to be here. If we demystify these harmless lookalike snakes, hopefully coral snake myths will start to dissipate. (by Chance Stevens)
Observing the Reef: Discover Fish Behavior - Through observation, snorkelers and divers can learn a great deal about fish and their behaviors. This video is a share of fish behaviors I have witnessed while snorkeling along the El Sargento shoreline. (by William Ihne)
Bird's Eye View: Attracting Birds to Your Yard - In the last two to three years, several studies have been published in scientific journals suggesting that having nature, for example singing birds, in your immediate environment can lead to greater well-being and health and overall life enrichment and even a prolonging of life. (by David Bird)
History of La Ventana: The Cabalerra de Cerralvo (Part 2) - From El Sargento and La Ventana, you can watch shadows paint Isla Cerralvo a changing hew of colors from sunrise to sunset. The island provides beautiful views, but it also conceals many tales. The Caballera de Cerralvo, told here for the first time, is one of them. (by Tom Spradley)
