Late-evening satellite passes measured generally west winds of 5-10 knots over the Sea of Cortez, however the majority of model forecasts show the background flow becoming more northerly this afternoon. Infrared satellite loops early this morning showed a few narrow bands of thin, high clouds but model forecasts indicate a sunny afternoon ahead so we should see a sizable thermal boost. La Ventana Stories
An ongoing series of write-ups about the history and the happenings of La Ventana Bay and the surrounding region. Recent highlights:
All Things Reptile: Almost Snake Season - It is almost snake season! Mid March is usually the beginning of the snake breeding season down here and, as the spring comes and the kiters go, they should be coming out more and more! (by Chance Stevens)
Observing the Reef: Breaking Oarfish News! - Oarfish are in the news. The Oarfish Beaching Project is underway and collaborating with a senior researcher at CICIMAR- the National Marine Research Institute in La Paz (by William Ihne)
Data Splash: Every Whale Has a Story to Tell - Just like human fingerprints, no two whale tails are alike. Their unique markingsβpigment patterns, scars, and fluke shapesβallow scientists to track them over time. For decades, researchers have used photo-identification techniques to study humpback whales, following their incredible migrations and monitoring population health. (by Valentine Chassagnon)
Meet the Owners: Mariscos El Palmar - Nestled along the main road in La Ventana, right where the Thursday farmers market takes place, you'll find Mariscos El Palmar β but the way it got there was less traditional than you might expect. (by Natalie Smith)
The Sea Around Us: Mako Sharks - Last December we encountered a mako shark swimming at the surface, I had seen a couple before, but not like this. We stopped the motor and watched it swim around our boat, coming back and forth slowly, very relaxed, and curious. It looked like it had a malformation on its spine, which probably explains its behavior. (by MarΓa Rodriguez-Salinas)
Bird's Eye View: Attracting Birds to Your Yard - In the last two to three years, several studies have been published in scientific journals suggesting that having nature, for example singing birds, in your immediate environment can lead to greater well-being and health and overall life enrichment and even a prolonging of life. (by David Bird)
History of La Ventana: The Cabalerra de Cerralvo (Part 2) - From El Sargento and La Ventana, you can watch shadows paint Isla Cerralvo a changing hew of colors from sunrise to sunset. The island provides beautiful views, but it also conceals many tales. The Caballera de Cerralvo, told here for the first time, is one of them. (by Tom Spradley)
