Baja Birding Club Outing – Sierra Laguna Biosphere Reserve

Sunday Jan 21 @ 7:30 am - 10:30 pm

Our first outing for 2024 will be to the Sierra Laguna Biosphere Reserve.   We will meet at the Marlin Azul restaurant at 0730 this coming Sunday, January 21 to set up a carpool.  We will then drive past San Antonio toward San Bartolo but roughly halfway, we will turn right at the fork toward the Reserve onto a dirt road.   There should be a small billboard at that fork describing the Reserve.   We will next drive several kilometers over a number of cow guards to arrive at a very tiny ranch with a very small creek where we will park our vehicles.   You will need to bring some pesos to pay for parking…..it should be no more than 100 pesos per vehicle (but it could be per person so be prepared!).   We always see some interesting species at this ranch, including acorn woodpeckers, yellow-breasted chats, San Lucas robins, Xantu’s hummingbirds, and several warbler species.   If there is interest, we can continue on from there to a large arroyo to try to find Baird’s junco, a species endemic to Baja.  And if there is even further interest, we can drive back to the main highway and go to San Bartolo to eat some of the best homemade ice cream in Baja!
